Tungsten is one of the hardest materials that have been identified in nature. It has a high density and is virtually impossible to soften. Natural tungsten is a silver‑white metal. When processed into a high‑grade powder, it may combust and ignite spontaneously. Plant‑derived tungsten contains five stable isotopes and 21 distinct hazardous isotopes.
High-temperature industrial furnaces require tungsten‐based components for successful operation. Tungsten rods or flat heating elements are used in vacuum and hydrogen furnaces. Tungsten metal is employed for heat shields and other furnace components and structures.
Tungsten is used in various industrial processes because it exhibits high durability and stability. It is highly resistant to corrosion. Its melting point is approximately 3422°C and its tensile strength ranks among the highest in metals. However, natural tungsten may display limited ductility.
