Aluminium Bromide Description
Aluminium Bromide is a well water‐soluble, crystalline aluminium source for applications that are compatible with bromide ions and lower (acidic) pH values. Most metal bromide compounds dissolve in water and are used in water treatment, chemical analysis and in ultra‐high purity for specific crystal growth applications. In an aqueous solution, the bromide ion can be detected by adding carbon disulphide (CS₂) and chlorine. Aluminium Bromide is generally available in most quantities immediately. Ultra‐high purity and high purity formulations improve both the optical performance and the suitability as scientific standards. Nanoscale elemental powders and suspensions are available as alternative forms with a large surface area.
Stanford Advanced Materials (SAM) manufactures many standard grades, including Mil Spec (military grade), ACS, reagent and technical grade, food, agricultural and pharmaceutical grade, optical grade, USP and EP/BP (European Pharmacopoeia/British Pharmacopoeia), and complies with the applicable ASTM test standards. Both standard and customised packaging are available. Additional technical, research and safety (MSDS) information, as well as a reference calculator for converting relevant units, are available.

Applications of Aluminium Bromide
Aluminium Bromide is employed as an alkylation, bromination and isomerisation catalyst in organic synthesis. It functions as a strong Lewis acid in Lewis acid-catalysed reactions, for example epoxide ring-opening. It is used as a catalyst in the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. It also serves in bromination and isomerisation reactions in organic synthesis. It is utilised in the polymerisation reaction to produce poly(o-xylen) from benzocyclobutene.
