Calcium Stearate Description

Calcium Stearate (CAS: 1592-23-0) is a bright white, crystalline powder. The molecular weight is 607.02, and the melting point is between 147°C and 149°C, decomposing upon heating. It reacts with strong acids and decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding calcium salt.

• Calcium stearate acts as a flow agent in powders, including some food products, as a surface conditioner in hard candies such as chews, as an impregnating agent for textiles, and as a lubricant in pencils and coloured pencils.
• The concrete industry utilises calcium stearate for efflorescence control in cement-containing products used to produce concrete blocks and paving stones, as well as for sealing.
• In paper making, calcium stearate serves as a lubricant to achieve a good gloss and to prevent dust generation and crease formation during the production of paper and cardboard.
• In plastics, it may function as an acid scavenger or neutraliser, as a lubricant, and as a release agent when used at concentrations of up to 1,000 ppm. It can be included in plastic colourant concentrates to improve pigment wetting.
• In rigid PVC, it can accelerate fusion, enhance flow properties and reduce swelling of the mould.
• In the personal care and pharmaceutical industries, it serves among other purposes as a release agent for tablets, as an anti-sticking agent, and as a gelling agent.
• Calcium stearate is a component of certain types of defoamers.
