Case

Alumina Plate for High-Temperature Wafer Processing

Challenge:

A semiconductor equipment manufacturer required a component for a high-temperature wafer processing station. The part had to provide a perfectly flat, stable surface to hold silicon wafers at temperatures exceeding 1400°C, while also acting as an electrical insulator to prevent circuit damage. Their existing materials warped or experienced electrical breakdown, leading to wafer contamination and yield loss. They approached SAM for an alternative material.

Solution:

The company switched to a custom-machined 99.7% Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) Plate based on advice received. This material possesses the following properties:

High-Temperature Stability: The aluminium oxide plate has a maximum operating temperature of 1650°C and maintained dimensional stability without warping.
Excellent Electrical Insulation: The plate exhibits high volume resistivity (>10¹⁴ Ohm-cm), which prevents current leakage and protects the sensitive wafers.
Superior Flatness & Hardness: It can be precision-ground to an ultra-flat surface, ensuring uniform wafer heating and resisting scratches from automated handling.

Result:

The aluminium oxide plate provided a reliable, inert platform and improved wafer yield and process consistency. Its durability also resulted in reduced unplanned downtime and replacement part costs. Consequently, it delivers a strong return on investment and enhances the performance of the entire processing system for the client's company.
