Introduction Nutrition supplements marketed as 'fat burners' are purported to acutely enhance fat metabolism or energy expenditure, hinder fat absorption, facilitate weight loss, boost fat oxidation during physical activity, or induce long-term adaptations that support fat metabolism. These supplements frequently incorporate multiple ingredients, each with its own proposed mechanism, and are often claimed to exhibit effects when combined. A wide array of supplements are promoted for their ability to augment fat metabolism; prominent examples include caffeine, carnitine, green tea, conjugated linoleic acid, forskolin, chromium, kelp, and fucoxanthin. This review provides a concise summary of the existing evidence for some of these compounds. Current literature indicates that caffeine and green tea possess data supporting their fat metabolism-enhancing properties. Conversely, while some other supplements demonstrate potential, scientific evidence remains limited. The prevalence of these supplements is largely driven by industry trends, often outpacing the growth of their scientific validation.
