Introduction Ruthenium sandwich complexes with photoresponsive arene ligands can catalyse azide-thioalkyne cycloaddition (RuAtAC) under UV light exposure, facilitating bioorthogonal reactions in aqueous biological mixtures. This approach is applicable for selectively modifying biopolymers, such as DNA and peptides. Moreover, the ruthenium-based technique complements copper-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), allowing for mutually orthogonal processes.
