Introduction This study reevaluates the history of 'nipponium,' an element identified by Japanese chemist Masataka Ogawa in 1908. Since 1996, extensive research by H.K. Yoshihara has suggested that nipponium, initially believed to occupy atomic number 43, was actually rhenium (75). Our paper critically reinterprets existing data and confirms Ogawa's work as evidence that nipponium was indeed rhenium. We further address the scepticism and criticism surrounding Ogawa's findings and Yoshihara's interpretation, offering resolutions to these debates.
