Introduction The catalytic hydrogenation of benzo-fused heteroarenes traditionally yields products with the heteroaryl ring reduced. This study reveals a Ru-catalysed method using a chiral spiroketal diphosphine, selectively hydrogenating the carbocycle of fused N-heteroarenes, such as quinoline and isoquinoline, to produce 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro compounds. The system also efficiently performs asymmetric hydrogenation on heteroarenes with boryl or amino groups. Experimental evidence supports the homogeneous catalytic nature, with a proposed inner-sphere mechanism initiating with η4-coordination of quinoline to the Ru dihydride complex, followed by hydride transfer and sequential H2 oxidative addition and C–H reductive elimination.
