Silicon: A Review of Its Potential Role in the Prevention and Treatment of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

Title Silicon: A Review of Its Potential Role in the Prevention and Treatment of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

Introduction Calcium and vitamin D are well-known for bone health, but silicon also plays a crucial role. Scientific studies show silicon is vital for bone formation and maintenance, enhancing bone matrix quality and mineralization. Consuming more bioavailable silicon can increase bone mineral density and strength. Sources include whole grains, cereals, beer, and vegetables such as green beans. Silicon, often found as silica or silicon dioxide in food, has limited absorption in the intestines. Greater academic focus on silicon could improve nutrition, supplements, and understanding of its role in managing postmenopausal osteoporosis.
