Glass Fibre Membrane Description

The glass fibre membrane consists of 100% borosilicate glass fibres and is available in two variations: chemically inert without a binder and with a binder. The addition of a binder serves to increase the mechanical strength of the glass fibre membrane, which is primarily used for the filtration of coarse particles (e.g. macromolecular substances, dust). To avoid chemical reactions with the filtered substances during the filtration of organic materials, glass with inorganic binders is used. For the filtration of inorganic materials, a glass fibre membrane with an organic binder is used. This type of depth filter membrane is characterised by a rapid flow rate, high load capacity, and extremely small retained particles, which can range down to the sub-micron range. The glass fibre membrane can withstand temperatures of 500°C and can be employed for specific weight analysis and high-temperature gas filtration, which requires combustion.

The glass fibre membrane has a capillary fibre structure and can absorb more water than an equivalent cellulose filter membrane. It is non-hygroscopic and biologically inert. It is resistant to most solvents and reagents except for hydrofluoric acid and highly concentrated acid-base solutions. All are chemically resistant.
