The Proton Exchange Membrane (Water Treatment), also known as polymer electrolyte membrane, is a key component in flow batteries, particularly in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) and other emerging types. Its primary function is to selectively allow protons (H⁺ ions) to pass between the positive and negative chambers while preventing the transfer of larger ions, active materials, or other unwanted species from one half-cell to the other.

For the Proton Exchange Membrane, a high-strength polytetrafluoroethylene fabric serves as the support layer, which is combined with a perfluorosulfonic acid resin exhibiting optimal molecular weight and ion exchange capacity. It possesses high chemical resistance and durability, finding extensive application in water treatment, such as in the treatment of highly saline wastewater and electrodialysis.
