TZM Plate Description

TZM alloy plate refers to a strip form of the TZM alloy (Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum), a high-temperature alloy based on Molybdenum. The Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum alloy (TZM) is a high-temperature alloy and a solid solution strengthened, particle-reinforced Molybdenum-based alloy. The development of a Molybdenum-Titanium solid solution and the excellent dispersion of Titanium carbides provide good strength properties up to temperatures of 1 400 °C. The recrystallisation temperature of TZM is approximately 250 °C higher than that of pure Molybdenum, enabling better weldability.

TZM (Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum alloy) consists of 0.50 % Titanium, 0.08 % Zirconium, 0.02 % Carbon, with the remainder as Molybdenum. TZM exhibits a higher recrystallisation temperature, and greater strength and hardness at both room and elevated temperatures compared to unalloyed Molybdenum, along with good ductility. Additionally, TZM possesses good thermal conductivity, a low vapour pressure, and excellent corrosion resistance, making it machinable.

Common manufacturing techniques for Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum alloys include arc melting and powder metallurgy.

In arc melting and casting, pure Molybdenum is melted with an arc, a specified amount of alloying elements such as Ti and Zr is added according to the weight percentage, and the traditional casting method is applied to produce a TZM alloy.

In the powder metallurgical approach, high-purity Molybdenum powder and TiH2 powder, ZrH2 powder, and graphite powder are uniformly mixed in proportion, then shaped by cold isostatic pressing and sintered at high temperature under a protective atmosphere to obtain a TZM billet; the billet is then hot rolled (high temperature forging) at elevated temperatures, annealed at high temperature, warm rolled (medium temperature forging), annealed at medium temperature to relieve stresses, and then warm rolled (warm forging) to obtain the finished TZM material. The rolling (forging) of the billet and subsequent heat treatment significantly influence the performance, anisotropy, and microstructure of the material.

TZM alloy is typically processed into bars and plates. Powder metallurgy allows for the reduction of large equipment such as vacuum arc furnaces, large extrusion presses, and forging hammers as well as associated high-temperature thermal furnaces, simplifies the process, reduces the production cycle, decreases consumption, enhances production capacity, and improves yield, thereby significantly reducing costs.
