The trifluoromethanesulfonate ion is a weakly coordinating anion. Silver trifluoromethanesulfonate is a useful halide abstraction reagent. It serves as a reactive trifluoromethylating agent and a source of soluble silver ions, which are utilised to generate electrophilic onium species and to facilitate Friedel–Crafts, nucleophilic alkene cyclisation and esterification reactions.

It produces olefins from secondary phosphates and thiophosphates. Consequently, this reagent enables the etherification of alcohols with primary alkyl halides under mild conditions.

It is employed in the synthesis of cationic rhodium catalysts derived from Rh complexes for the hydrophosphination of acetylenes. It is also used as a catalyst for the formation of silyl ethers via the hydrosilylation of aldehydes.
