Electrical Silicon Nitride Insulator Description
Due to its uniform performance at elevated temperatures, Si3N4 is commonly used as a ceramic material in the metallurgical industry. Its microstructure imparts a resistance to thermal cycling. The material evidences measurable creep resistance and oxidation stability. Its low thermal conductivity and high wear resistance enable it to perform under the conditions encountered in many industrial applications.
Owing to its low thermal conductivity and its resistance to attack from various molten metals, Si3N4 is employed as an electrical insulator in many high-frequency heating applications. Compared with conventional insulating materials, Si3N4 exhibits higher measured mechanical strength and thermal cycling resistance. Consequently, it is a suitable insulator for aerospace applications.
There are five distinct methods for producing silicon nitride, namely, SRBSN, GPSN, HPSN, HIP-SN and RBSN. The processing technique and raw material vary accordingly. Of these, GPSN is most frequently adopted for the fabrication of Si3N4 components.
