Terbium(III)-Fluoride (TbF3) Description:
Terbium(III)-fluoride (TbF3) from SAM is a white powder. It is insoluble in water and moderately soluble in strong mineral acids.
Terbium(III)-fluoride is used in specialised lasers and as a dopant in solid-state devices. It acts as an activator for green phosphors used in colour cathode-ray tubes. Terbium is also used as a dopant in calcium fluoride, calcium tungstate, and strontium molybdate. Green terbium phosphors, which display bright lemon-yellow fluorescence, are combined with divalent blue europium phosphors and trivalent red europium phosphors to achieve trichromatic lighting. Consequently, this lighting system utilises a significant portion of the world’s terbium supply. Trichromatic lighting offers a higher luminous efficacy per unit of electrical energy than incandescent lamps and is used in alloys and electronic device manufacturing.
Synonym: Terbium trifluoride, Trifluoroterbium
