Beschreibung:
Terbium(III) chloride (also known as Terbium chloride hydrate) quickly adsorbs moisture from the air and forms unstable hydrates.
Terbium chloride is used as an activator for green luminescent materials employed in colour television tubes. It is also applied in specialised lasers and as a dopant in solid‐state components. Chloride compounds conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water. Green Terbium luminescent materials fluoresce in lemon‐yellow. They are combined with divalent blue and trivalent red Europium luminescent materials. This combination enables trichromatic lighting technology. Trichromatic lighting offers a higher luminous efficacy for a given quantity of electrical energy compared with incandescent lighting. It is used in alloys and in the manufacture of electronic devices.

Anwendung:
Terbium chloride is frequently used as a starting material for Terbiummetall. Terbium metal is used in electronic devices and as an additive in certain specialised alloys such as Terfenol-D.
Tb metal is also used in magnetomechanical devices such as sonar equipment and mufflers.
