Description:
Terbium is a silvery grey, malleable, soft and ductile rare earth element that can be cut with a knife. It remains relatively stable in air and does not occur in a free state in nature. However, it is readily found in minerals such as cerite, gadolinite and euxenite. Terbium compounds exhibit strong fluorescence and are frequently used in the manufacture of green phosphors.
Applications of Terbium:
- It is used as a dopant in calcium fluoride, calcium tungstate and strontium molybdate.
- It is used in actuators, naval sonar systems, sensors and other equipment.
- It is incorporated in alloys for the manufacture of electronic devices.
- It is utilised in fuel cells as a crystal stabiliser.
