Cadmium is a naturally occurring element that exists in trace quantities in air, water, soil and food. All soils and rocks, including coal and mineral fertiliser, contain measurable cadmium.

Cadmium is a soft, malleable, bluish‐white metal. It is chemically analogous to zinc and mercury. It can be cut with a knife and resists corrosion.
Most cadmium is used in nickel–cadmium batteries (Ni‐Cd). Additional applications include its use in alloys, coatings, solar cells, plastic stabilisers and pigments.
Cadmium forms several compounds. For example, cadmium sulphide (CdS) is used as a photoconductive coating on copier drums and as a yellow pigment. Cadmium selenide (CdSe) is used as a red pigment, commonly known as cadmium red.
