Platinum is a metal with a silvery white colour. It is dense, malleable and ductile. It belongs to the platinum group of elements and is classified in group 10 of the periodic table. Platinum has the third highest density. Its minimal reactivity ensures corrosion resistance that is equivalent to gold.
Platinum is mainly used in catalysts for vehicles. In the chemical industry, it is used as a catalyst. Because of its resistance to corrosion, it is also used in the manufacture of laboratory vessels. Platinum wire is used in high-temperature electric furnaces.
