Description of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride Sheet
Compared to conventional boron nitride ceramics, pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN) utilises raw materials with a significantly higher level of purity. PBN sheets, discs and other products are synthesised by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) using BCl3 and NH3.
Pyrolytic boron nitride sheets are high-performance ceramics that exhibit high electrical resistance and good thermal conductivity. They are a high-purity material free of porosity. They are deposited via chemical vapour deposition (CVD) on various graphite forms. Although PBN may be deposited on different substrates, it is applied only to graphite because of the high temperatures and corrosive atmosphere during processing. Graphite substrates coated with PBN have improved surface performance with enhanced purity and reduced porosity and roughness. The PBN material withstands temperatures up to 2 500 °C. These coated products perform reliably under high vacuum and high temperature conditions. They are suitable for use in the semiconductor industry.

Applications of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride Sheet
-
Semiconductor manufacturing equipment: PBN sheets are used as crucibles, boats and other components in semiconductor production processes.
-
Electronic packaging: PBN sheets are employed in electronic packaging for insulation and thermal management in high-performance semiconductor components, including LEDs and laser diodes.
-
Microwave and RF amplifiers: PBN’s measured thermal conductivity and dielectric properties permit its use in microwave and RF amplifier applications.
-
Crystal growth processes: PBN sheets are used as crucibles or containers in the growth of single crystals such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) and other compound semiconductors.
-
High-temperature furnaces: In high-temperature furnaces, PBN sheets are used as insulators or as parts of heating elements. This is due to their ability to withstand temperatures up to approximately 2 000 °C in an inert atmosphere and their resistance to thermal shock.
-
Neutron radiation shielding: Boron in PBN exhibits a high cross-section for neutron absorption; consequently, PBN sheets are employed for neutron radiation shielding in nuclear reactors and experimental applications.
-
Aerospace: Due to its low mass and high temperature resistance, PBN is used in various aerospace applications, including components that must perform under severe conditions.
