There are 72 individual and 17 combined hazard statements – these are identified with a unique alphanumeric code consisting of a letter and three digits as follows
the letter "H" (for "Hazard statement");
a digit indicating the nature of the hazard as follows:
- "2" for physical hazards
- "3" for health hazards
- "4" for environmental hazards
followed by two digits representing the sequential numbering derived from the inherent properties of the substance or mixture, for instance explosive properties (codes from 200 to 210) and flammability (codes from 220 to 230), etc.

**PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS
There are 116 individual and 33 combined precautionary statements provided with a unique alphanumeric code consisting of a letter and three numbers:
the letter "P" (for "Precautionary statement");
a digit that designates the type of precautionary statement as follows:
- "1" for general precautionary statements
- "2" for prevention-focused instructions
- "3" for response instructions
- "4" for storage instructions
- "5" for disposal instructions
followed by two digits corresponding to the sequential numbering of the precautionary statements
