Description of Sodium Chloride Crystal Substrates

The sodium chloride (NaCl) crystal is water-soluble and softens readily. It cannot be polished by chemical processes. NaCl single-crystal substrates are used as substrate material for epitaxial thin film deposition. Sodium chloride is inherently hygroscopic and reacts sensitively to moisture. NaCl crystal substrates must be stored in a desiccator in order to prevent hydration.

local exhaust ventilation. When handling quantities of this material, be sure to wear appropriate
