Introduction The introduction of two-dimensional MXenes has significantly expanded their applications across various fields. However, the potential of novel MXene-based family members in theranostic nanomedicine has not been extensively studied. This research presents a pioneering superparamagnetic MXene-based nanoplatform designed for effective breast-cancer theranostics. Utilizing tantalum carbide (Ta4C3) MXene, the study involves its surface functionalisation with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) for enhanced diagnostic imaging and therapeutic efficacy. The fabrication process included exfoliating Ta4C3 nanosheets and in-situ growth of IONPs. These Ta4C3-IONP composites, stabilised with soybean phospholipid, demonstrated exceptional photothermal therapy performance, CT imaging, and MRI capabilities in vitro and in vivo. The high photothermal conversion efficiency led to complete tumour eradication, underscoring their potential in breast-tumour photo-ablation. This work extends the biomedical utility of MXenes and introduces a novel theranostic platform for breast cancer treatment.
