Introduction This study analyses the chemical reactions between carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen (O2) at kinked platinum surfaces using a specially designed Pt sample. We investigate the CO oxidation process, focusing on the CO-covered/poisoned and O-covered/active phases. Through high-resolution X-ray photoemission, we identify and quantify terrace and kink species, revealing structural and chemical variations across different crystal planes. We observe CO adsorption preferences at step edges and increased O coverage on kinked planes. These findings suggest enhanced reactivity and higher ignition temperatures for CO oxidation at kinked surfaces compared to terraces.
