Description of Tungsten Alloy Multi-Leaf Collimators
Tungsten alloy is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Its density ranges between 17.0 g/cm³ and 18.6 g/cm³. This density enables the tungsten alloy MLC to absorb radiation effectively. Consequently, radiation therapy equipment absorbs radiation adequately to protect patient safety.
The MLC comprises movable leaves or shields. With 20–80 leaves, the MLC is computer-controlled. The device adjusts the position of the shields or leaves to generate a custom-shaped field.
Tungsten alloy MLCs are suitable for the treatment of liver cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer. Given that radiation therapy equipment may irradiate healthy tissues, the collimator is essential for shielding radiation during treatment.
Applications of Tungsten Alloy Multi-Leaf Collimators
- Replacement for conventional blocking
- Modulation of radiation intensity
