Aluminium-Lithium Alloy (Al-Li) 8090 Description
The Aluminium-Lithium Alloy (Al-Li) 8090 serves as an alternative to alloys 2014 and 2024. It is a medium-strength aluminium-lithium alloy. Its density is approximately 10 % lower than that of comparable alloys, and its elasticity modulus is approximately 11 % higher.
Lithium is the lightest metal element. The addition of lithium to aluminium reduces the specific weight of the alloy and increases its stiffness, while the alloy maintains high tensile strength, adequate corrosion and fatigue resistance, and sufficient ductility.
Lithium reduces density and increases stiffness when alloyed with aluminium. With appropriate alloy design, aluminium-lithium alloys achieve the required combinations of strength and toughness as specified by measured data.

Aluminium-Lithium Alloy (Al-Li) 8090 Application
Aluminium-lithium alloys are used in shipping, aerospace and electronics manufacturing. They are applied in components where reduced weight, ease of forming and corrosion resistance are required. In the aerospace sector, these alloys are utilised in areas such as wing leading and trailing edges, fuselage stringers and internal framework members. Consequently, Al-Li is considered for several applications in modern aircraft.
