Introduction The Jadar Valley in Serbia holds a significant lithium/borate deposit, targeted by Rio Tinto Corporation for large-scale processing of boron- and lithium-containing ore. This project represents one of the initial lithium mining operations situated within a populated and agricultural region globally. While the company asserts adherence to environmental protection standards, the project faces considerable local opposition due to potential severe environmental effects on groundwater, soil, water resources, biodiversity, and waste management. Preliminary drilling activities by the mining company have already led to environmental harm, with boron-rich mine water escaping from test wells and damaging crops. Further analysis indicates significantly higher concentrations of boron, arsenic, and lithium in downstream river sections compared to upstream areas. Additionally, soil samples consistently demonstrate levels exceeding remediation limits, negatively affecting both surface and underground water systems. The full operation of the mine is anticipated to intensify these issues through the creation of tailings ponds, increased mine wastewater, and heightened noise, air, and light pollution, thereby jeopardising local communities, their freshwater supplies, agricultural lands, livestock, and other assets.
